‘Wear sunscreen EVERYDAY’ – a message that should definitely be ingrained in our minds! A good sunscreen with a sufficient SPF (sun protection factor) is crucial for the overall health and appearance of your skin. Without it, you are exposing your skin to the sun and causing lots of damage.
Who should use SPF?
EVERYONE! Men, women and children over the age of 6 months should be using SPF every single day. This also includes all skin types. Our skin cannot fight the damage created by the sun alone. This damage occurs continuously throughout our lives regardless of whether it gets burned.
Does it really protect you as much as everyone says?
Absolutely. Ultraviolet rays, which cause sun damage and skin cancer, are always present, whether it’s sunny, rainy, hot or cold. Even if the skies are filled with constant clouds, the rays are never blocked out and are able to constantly damage the skin. The best way to protect yourself is to wear SPF and not just during the summer!
SPF is such a hassle to put on…
We’re not talking about the SPF you take to the beach with your family and leave you all feeling sticky! There’s a wide range of products you can choose from that best suit your skin type. From creams to sprays, to gels and lotions, there is an SPF out there for everyone. Some of our staff favourites include the Teoxane Advanced Perfecting Shield SPF, and the Obagi Sunshield SPF.
What are the benefits of wearing SPF every day?
There are so many more benefits than the obvious sun protection. Wearing SPF daily actually reduces the risk of cancer, especially melanoma. This is a type of skin cancer that is known to often be aggressive and life-threatening. SPF will increase the protection you need from this cancer, and help to decrease your chances of getting it.
SPF also helps to keep you looking radiant and refreshed. Overexposure to sunlight can increase the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, and sagging – something we all want to avoid. A good SPF can help protect you against the harmful effects of premature skin aging.
Healthy skin overall comes from including SPF into your daily skin care routine. It protects the essential proteins in the skin, which are responsible for benefits such as smooth and healthy skin textures. It also helps to even out your complexion, as such damage is one of the main reasons behind uneven skin tones.
